Due to PM2.5 pollution, Shanghai ranked first in most premature deaths with 17,600, and Beijing ranked second with 18,200 deaths.

PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 mm.

Anumita Roychowdhury, director of the Center for Science and Environment, emphasized: "Air pollution is becoming a major threat. The study shows that although China has adopted preliminary measures for pollution control goals and strategies, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan urgently need government policies.
